Carnew Nursing Home is privileged to have residents like Paul, whose rich life experiences and positive outlook continue to inspire us all.
Join us as we explore the unique aspects of Paul’s life, celebrating the wisdom and warmth he brings to our community.
Paul’s most prominent life memory:
Paul’s all-time favourite memory takes us back to the idyllic scenes of his youth. He fondly recalls the joy of being at home, surrounded by the warmth of family. The memory of boiling the kettle in the field, with the burning furze bushes, brings a sense of nostalgia. In the company of his mother, he and his siblings made hay and watched as the older neighbours smoked pipes, all while sharing laughter together.
In reminiscing about his childhood, Paul tells me that he matter-of-factly connects with Thomas Hardy’s poem, In Time of ‘The Breaking of Nations’. Despite Paul’s academic background and deep appreciation for literature, Paul sees beyond the intellectual aspect. The poem seamlessly intertwines with his enduring memories of humble moments in the field, creating a genuine and lasting connection. Together, Paul and Hardy emphasise the enduring nature of these simple yet profound experiences, lasting treasures in the passage of time.
Paul’s favourite childhood memory:
Adding to the above, Paul fondly remembers playing hurling and football with his four brothers and four sisters. The spirited games and shared laughter created enduring memories that he holds dear.
Paul’s favourite things to do in Carnew Nursing Home:
Whether enjoying the latest documentary or immersing himself in a good book, Paul finds solace in the simple pleasures of watching television and reading. These activities keep him engaged and provide moments of relaxation in his daily routine. This, according to Paul, is something he ‘genuinely values’ about Carnew Nursing Home. Throughout our conversation, he often highlights the freedom to enjoy his interests without feeling rushed, emphasising the importance of this aspect in his overall happiness and well-being.
Paul’s favourite thing about Carnew Nursing Home:
For Paul, the camaraderie with fellow residents, and the kindness of the staff, have made his time at Carnew Nursing Home truly special. The ‘sense of community and support from everyone around’ has created a true sense of belonging for him.
Paul’s words of wisdom:
Drawing from a lifetime of experiences, Paul offers valuable advice to the youth of today (and to everybody navigating life). He emphasises the cyclical nature of life, with its ups and downs. Despite challenges, Paul reassures everyone that there is ‘always help available’, and that ‘better times will come’. In the face of life’s uncertainties, Paul encourages others to ‘find peace and embrace the light that always shines, even in the darkest moments’.
