Come along with us as we delve into the distinctive aspects of Fr. Larkin’s life, celebrating the wisdom and warmth he brings to our community.

Fr. Larkin’s most memorable day:

“The 19th June 1960”. It was the day he stepped into the sacred realm of priesthood, being ordained after years of seminary in Maynooth. This day marked the beginning of his profound journey in the priesthood, and in his calling.

A few of Fr. Larkin’s poignant life memories:

Fr. Larkin reflects on a multitude of significant moments throughout his life.

He recalls being the third youngest in a family of 16 children, with his childhood being filled with the simple joys of rural life—farming wheat, barley, oats, beets, and cattle. The daily mile-and-a-half walk to school in Gusserane remains a cherished memory too, symbolising the beauty of his upbringing.

Amidst these idyllic moments, he shares poignant memories of World War II, recalling the bombing of Campile by the German Luftwaffe and the rationing of essentials. Both instances provide a window into an Ireland bygone.

One of the fondest periods of his life was when he served as an English teacher at St. Peter’s College in Wexford town. His love for English, specifically Shakespeare, shines through as he recites soliloquies that transport us to another time “tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow…”. Fr. Larkin mentions a time when he would travel to America during the school’s summer holidays, serving God by bringing communion to hospitals and offering comfort to the sick. He also recalls when he helped out in Loreto Secondary School in Wexford town, where he directed their Opera performances with precision!

Beyond his rich experiences in education and the arts, Fr. Larkin’s passion for sports is a constant in his life. From playing golf and participating in athletics during his youth, to now enjoying watching GAA and horse racing on the TV, he brings the spirit of competition and camaraderie to our community.

Fr. Larkin’s favourite things to do in Carnew Nursing Home:

Fr. Larkin finds immense joy in giving mass at Carnew Nursing Home, creating a sense of spiritual connection and warmth to all of those within our community.

Fr. Larkin’s words of wisdom:

Fr. Larkin looks at me lovingly “Enjoy life!” he emphasises. “Make the most of life, and everything else will flow from that”. “Don’t be selfish”.  “Have good friends and avoid the bad ones”. His words echo a profound truth, a guiding light for us all as we navigate the journey of life.
